Day trips from Osaka

Osaka sits in the middle of Kansai, so its best day trips are short. JR Special Rapid trains reach Kyoto in about 30 minutes and Himeji in about an hour, and the shinkansen is quicker still. In Kyoto, start with the torii gates of Fushimi Inari, or with the wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera and the lanes down to Gion; in Himeji, with the castle called the White Heron. Nara, the old capital, with Tōdai-ji’s Great Buddha and the deer of Nara Park, is about 40 minutes away by Kintetsu. Each has a free Mappu audio guide with a map, and a self-guided walk where Mappu has one.

Where to go

Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto

The head shrine of Inari, with tunnels of vermilion torii gates climbing the mountain behind it. The grounds are open day and night and free to enter, and the climb to the summit and back takes 2 to 3 hours. Tōfuku-ji, a great Zen temple, is a short walk north.

Getting there
Keihan Line from central Osaka to Fushimi-Inari station, about 45 minutes. Or JR to Kyoto, then the JR Nara Line two stops to Inari, across the road from the shrine gate.
Time
About 45 minutes each way; allow half a day, more if you climb to the top.

Kiyomizu-dera and Gion, Kyoto

Kiyomizu-dera’s main hall stands on a wooden stage 13 metres above the hillside, built without a single metal nail. From the temple, the stone lanes of Higashiyama run down past the Yasaka Pagoda to Gion, Kyoto’s geisha district.

Getting there
Keihan Line from central Osaka to Kiyomizu-Gojo, about 50 minutes, then about 25 minutes uphill on foot. At the end of the day, Gion-Shijo station on the same line is at the edge of Gion.
Time
About 1 hour each way; a full day with the walk down to Gion.

Nara

Japan’s capital from 710. Tōdai-ji, begun in 745 under Emperor Shōmu, houses the colossal Great Buddha, and Nara Park around it is home to more than 1,500 sika deer, revered as messengers of the gods. Kasuga-taisha, with its vermilion corridors and about a thousand lanterns, and Kōfuku-ji, the Fujiwara clan’s temple, are a short walk away.

Getting there
Kintetsu Nara Line from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara, about 40 minutes, or the JR Yamatoji Rapid from Osaka station to JR Nara, about 50 minutes. Kōfuku-ji is a 5-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara, Tōdai-ji about 20 minutes through the park.
Time
About 40 minutes each way; most of a day for Tōdai-ji, the park and Kasuga-taisha.

Himeji Castle

Japan’s finest original castle, white-plastered and nicknamed the White Heron, with Okiku’s Well inside its walls. In 1993 it became one of Japan’s first UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Beside it, Kōko-en is nine walled gardens built in 1992 in the spirit of the Edo period.

Getting there
JR Special Rapid from Osaka to Himeji, about 1 hour, or the shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, about 30 minutes. The castle is a 15 to 20 minute walk straight up the avenue from the station.
Time
About 30 minutes to 1 hour each way; allow half a day for the castle and the gardens.

How to plan the day

  1. Kyoto is big: pick one side per day, Fushimi Inari in the south or Kiyomizu-dera and Gion in the east.
  2. Go early. Fushimi Inari and the lanes below Kiyomizu-dera are crowded from mid-morning.
  3. Himeji fits in half a day: the castle and Kōko-en in the morning, then back to Osaka.
  4. An IC card such as ICOCA works on JR, the Keihan Line and Kyoto’s city buses, so you need no ticket for each ride.
  5. In Nara, the deer bow for the shika senbei crackers sold in the park, but they also nip and butt: keep food and paper maps out of reach.

Questions travellers ask

How do I get from Osaka to Kyoto?

The JR Special Rapid from Osaka station reaches Kyoto station in about 30 minutes, and the shinkansen from Shin-Osaka in about 15. For Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Gion, the Keihan Line from central Osaka goes there without a change.

Is Himeji worth a day trip from Osaka?

Yes. Himeji Castle is the finest of Japan’s original castles, about an hour from Osaka by JR or 30 minutes by shinkansen. Half a day covers the castle and the Kōko-en gardens.

Can I see Kyoto and Himeji on the same day?

Both are on the JR line through Osaka, so it is possible, but rushed. Himeji in the morning and one part of Kyoto in the afternoon is the most that fits.

Is Nara worth a day trip from Osaka?

Yes. It is about 40 minutes away by Kintetsu, and Tōdai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, Kasuga-taisha and the deer of Nara Park are all within walking distance of each other. Allow most of a day.
