As you stand here in the Upper Castle Yard, you are in a space that has evolved from a thirteenth-century medieval fortress into a grand Georgian palace. For seven centuries, this was the headquarters of British rule in Ireland, the seat of the Viceroy, and a symbol of colonial power. Today, it serves as a premier government complex where the President of Ireland is inaugurated and world leaders are received.    From Stone Fortress to Georgian Palace

   To understand where you are, you must look back to the year 1204, when King John of England ordered a mighty castle to be built here for the city's defense and the protection of the royal treasury. If you look toward the southeastern corner, you will see the massive Record Tower, the only intact part of that original medieval fortification. Its walls are an incredible 4.8 meters thick, designed to withstand the fiercest sieges. However, the elegant palace buildings you see now are largely the result of a catastrophic fire in 1684 which destroyed much of the medieval castle. This disaster allowed architects to rebuild the site as the sophisticated Georgian administrative center you see today. Notice the contrast between the rugged limestone of the medieval tower and the refined classical windows of the State Apartments.

   The Seven Minute Handover

   The most pivotal day in this castle's long history occurred on January sixteenth, 1922. After centuries of British administration, Michael Collins and the new Provisional Government arrived in three taxi cabs to take control of the complex. Legend says that when the last British Viceroy rebuked Collins for being seven minutes late, Collins famously replied, 'We have been waiting 700 years, you can have the seven minutes'. Inside the State Apartments is Saint Patrick’s Hall, one of the most significant rooms in Ireland. Since 1938, it has seen the inauguration of every Irish President. As a practical tip, while the State Apartments are universally accessible by elevator, you should be mindful of the uneven cobblestones here in the courtyard which can be tricky underfoot.

   The Mystery of the Black Pool

   Did you know that the city of Dublin gets its name from this very site? If you head toward the Dubh Linn Garden behind the castle, you are standing above what was once a tidal pool where the River Poddle met the River Liffey. In the Irish language, 'Dubh Linn' means 'Black Pool'. In the ninth century, Viking raiders used this dark pool as a sheltered harbor for their longships. Today, the river still flows silently through a brick tunnel deep beneath your feet. The garden features an oval lawn with Celtic knot designs that follow the pattern of these ancient waters. It is a tranquil place to reflect on the layers of history—Viking, Norman, and Irish—that are literally buried beneath the grass.

   Uncovering More of the Castle

   Your journey through Dublin Castle is far from finished. Before you leave, make sure to find the Chapel Royal, a stunning piece of Gothic architecture from 1814 that is decorated with over 100 carved stone heads representing figures from Irish history. One of those heads even depicts Brian Boru, the high king of Ireland.
