Welcome to Glendalough. You are standing in what is often called the Valley of the Two Lakes, a place where the deep silence of the Wicklow Mountains meets over one thousand four hundred years of Irish history. As you look around, you will see the gray stone ruins and the iconic Round Tower set against a backdrop of lush green forests and steep glacial slopes. This site was founded in the sixth century by Saint Kevin, a man who sought total isolation but ended up creating one of the most important centers of learning and spirituality in all of Europe. Today, this valley is part of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, covering over twenty thousand hectares of protected wilderness. As you begin your walk, take a deep breath of the mountain air and imagine the thousands of pilgrims who, for centuries, traveled over these very hills to find sanctuary within these sacred walls.
