   Clans and Viking Defense

   The first stone fortress was built on this island in the early thirteenth century, during the reign of King Alexander the Second. It was a crucial defensive measure designed to protect the lands of Kintail from Viking raiders who controlled much of the North of Scotland at the time. Over the centuries, Eilean Donan became a stronghold for the Clan Mackenzie and their loyal allies, the Clan MacRae, who were often called the Mackenzies' coat of mail. If you enjoy a touch of the macabre, historical records from 1331 mention that 50 wrongdoers were executed here, and their heads were displayed on spikes along the castle walls to serve as a warning to others. Beyond the blood and stone, the castle has its share of legends. One ancient story tells of a young boy born to a clan chief who was given his first drink from the skull of a raven. According to the legend, this granted him the power to understand the language of birds, a gift that ultimately led to a prophecy that he would one day be more powerful than his own father.

   The Jacobite Ruin

   The castle you see today is actually a reconstruction, because the original medieval fortress met a fiery end in 1719. During the Jacobite rising of that year, which was supported by Spain, the castle was used as a base for approximately 46 Spanish soldiers and a magazine of gunpowder. The British government discovered the plot and sent three heavily armed warships, including the naval vessel Worcester, into Loch Alsh. For three days, they bombarded the stone walls with heavy cannon fire. When the Spanish garrison finally surrendered, the British soldiers discovered 343 barrels of gunpowder stored inside. They used that very same powder to blow the castle apart, leaving it in a state of absolute ruin. For the next 200 years, the island remained a desolate, broken silhouette until it was finally rescued from the mists of time in the early twentieth century.

   A Dream of Rebirth

   The castle's rebirth began in 1911, when Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap purchased the island and dedicated the next 20 years of his life and over 250,000 British pounds to its restoration. A local clerk of works named Farquhar MacRae led the construction, and it is said that the detailed design of the castle came to him in a dream. Remarkably, years later, old plans were discovered in Edinburgh Castle that confirmed his dream was incredibly faithful to the original layout. Before you cross the bridge, keep in mind a few practical tips: large backpacks are not allowed inside the castle for conservation reasons, but you can find free security lockers at the visitor center. Some even say the castle is still home to a Spanish soldier from the 1719 siege, known as the Spanish Ghost, who is often spotted in the gift shop area.
