Welcome to Quinta da Regaleira, a place often described as a book carved in stone. You are standing within a four hectare estate that feels like a fever dream of history and architecture. This mystical landscape was brought to life in the early twentieth century by Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a man so incredibly wealthy he was nicknamed Monteiro the Millionaire. However, he was more than just a man of means; he was a scholar of etymology, natural sciences, and ancient spiritual traditions. To build this personal sanctuary, he hired the Italian architect and stage designer Luigi Manini. Together, they transformed an ordinary summer residence into a theatrical masterpiece of symbols. Today, this site is a recognized United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage landmark and a cornerstone of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra.
