   The World's Oldest Shopping Mall

It is often called the oldest shopping mall in the world, and its origins go back to the thirteenth century when it was just a simple row of roofed stalls where merchants traded expensive fabrics. After a massive fire in 1555, the building was reconstructed in a stunning Renaissance style. If you look closely at the upper parapet of the building, you will spot ornate, carved masks known as mascarons. These were designed by the Italian master Santi Gucci and were believed to protect the hall from evil. Stretching 108 meters in length, the hall was once the pulsing hub of international trade, where spices from the East were swapped for Polish lead and famous salt. Today, you can still walk through the central ground-floor passage and find local artisans selling shimmering amber jewelry and hand-carved wood, keeping a seven-hundred-year-old tradition of commerce alive.

   The Silent Anthem of Saint Mary

   Now, look toward the corner of the square at the towering twin spires of Saint Mary’s Basilica. You will immediately notice that the towers were built at different heights. Local legend says that two brothers were hired to build them, but consumed by jealousy, the younger brother murdered the older one so that his own tower would be more grand. If you are here at the top of an hour, listen closely. You will hear a live trumpeter play a five-note melody called the Hejnal Mariacki from the small window of the taller tower. Note how the music stops abruptly? That is done to commemorate a brave thirteenth-century watchman who sounded the alarm during a Mongol invasion. While playing the warning call, he was struck in the throat by an arrow, saving the city but ending his song mid-note. The trumpeter plays the call four times, once in each cardinal direction: for the king at Wawel Castle, for the mayor, for the merchants, and finally, for travelers like you.

   While the square above is a feast for the eyes, there is an entire world hidden right beneath your feet. In 2005, major excavations revealed perfectly preserved medieval merchant stalls, ancient roads, and even cemeteries beneath the modern pavement. This 4,000 square meter space was transformed into the high-tech Rynek Underground Museum. You can spot the entrance nearby—it is marked by a modern glass pyramid near Saint Mary's Basilica. Inside, you can walk on glass walkways above original eleventh-century burials. Some of these are known as vampire burials, where bodies were found pinned down or bound to keep them from rising according to medieval superstition. A practical tip for your visit: the museum is incredibly popular and uses strictly timed entry tickets. It is highly recommended to book your tickets online well in advance.
