   Welcome to the Stone Colossus

   You are standing at the base of the largest alpine fortification in Europe, a place often whispered about as the Great Wall of the Alps. Stretching for more than 3 kilometers across the rugged mountainside of the Chisone Valley, the Fenestrelle Fort covers an astonishing 1.3 million square meters. It is not just one building, but a massive chain of three major forts and multiple redoubts linked by miles of stone walls. Built by the House of Savoy between 1728 and 1850, this structure was designed to be an impenetrable shield for the city of Turin against French invasion. As you look up towards the peaks, you are witnessing an engineering feat that took 122 years to complete.

   Three Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Six Steps

   The defining feature of this fortress is something you cannot find anywhere else on the continent: the Scala Coperta, or the Covered Staircase. Designed by the visionary military engineer Ignazio Bertola, this incredible tunnel contains exactly 3,996 steps. It was built so that troops could move between the upper and lower forts even in the dead of winter, protected from bitter Alpine snow and enemy fire. If you are not quite ready for a tunnel hike, there is also the Scala Reale, or Royal Staircase, an open-air path with 2,500 steps that offers breathtaking views of the peaks. Remarkably, despite its intimidating size and artillery, the fort never saw a major battle; its sheer presence was enough to discourage any potential invader.

   The Secrets of the Prison Walls

   While it was designed as a shield, the fort spent much of its history serving as a high-security prison. During the Napoleonic era and later under the Italian Unification, its cold, damp cells held state enemies, political dissidents, and even priests. One of the most fascinating stories belongs to a man named Pierre Picaud, who was imprisoned here and whose life of betrayal and revenge eventually inspired the famous novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. Walking through the Saint Carlo courtyard, you can almost hear the echoes of the 4,000 workers who once labored here during the peak of construction. This is a place where royal ambition and human suffering have left an indelible mark on the stone.

   Planning Your Ascent

   To truly experience the scale of Fenestrelle, you have three main ways to explore. The shortest tour focuses on the Saint Carlo Fort at the base, but the most legendary option is the Royal Walk, or Passeggiata Reale. This is a seven-hour journey that climbs 700 vertical meters up to the top at Fort delle Valli. A very important practical pointer for you: if you choose the seven-hour trek, you absolutely must wear professional hiking boots and carry a packed lunch, as there are no services once you begin the ascent. Most visits require a reservation, so check in at the Saint Carlo office early to secure your spot for the climb of a lifetime.

   The Silent Sentinel

   As you explore the various ramparts and parade grounds, take a moment to enjoy the deep silence of the mountainside. It is strange to think that such a massive machine of war has spent most of its life in peaceful isolation. From the Saint Carlo palace to the distant ruins of Fort Mutin nearby, every corner of this mountain tells a story of survival and heritage. Whether you are here to tackle the 4,000 steps or simply to marvel at the masonry, keep your eyes open for the small details: the thickness of the two-meter-thick walls and the way the stone seems to grow directly out of the mountainside.
