   Welcome to the San Thome Basilica in Chennai, a place where history, faith, and the salt air of the Bay of Bengal meet. As you stand before this gleaming white structure, you are visiting one of the most significant Christian landmarks on the planet. It is one of only three churches in the entire world built directly over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus Christ. To put that in perspective, the other two are the world-famous Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. For nearly 2,000 years, this site has been a beacon for pilgrims, including historical figures like the explorer Marco Polo, who visited in the late thirteenth century. Whether you are here for the spiritual atmosphere or the rich layers of colonial history, you are about to explore a sanctuary that connects ancient Judea to modern-day India.

   The Legacy of the Doubting Apostle

   To understand why this church exists here in Chennai, we must travel back to the year 52 AD. Tradition holds that Saint Thomas, often remembered as Doubting Thomas for wanting physical proof of Jesus’ resurrection, arrived on the shores of Kerala. After establishing several communities on the west coast, he traveled across the subcontinent to the east, reaching what was then the port town of Mylapore. He spent his final years preaching on the sands you see nearby and taking refuge in local caves. Sadly, his mission ended in martyrdom in the year 72 AD, when he was reportedly killed with a spear on a nearby hill now known as Saint Thomas Mount. His followers buried him here, on the beach, marking the beginning of this site’s journey from a small shrine to the grand cathedral you see today.

   Soaring Spires and Munich Glass

   While the history is ancient, the building you are looking at now was completed in 1896. The original sixteenth-century Portuguese church had fallen into disrepair, leading British architects to rebuild it in the grand Neo-Gothic style. Notice the striking verticality of the design; the main spire rises to an imposing height of 155 feet, or about 47 meters. This architectural style is defined by the pointed arches, tall steeples, and delicate tracery that give the basilica its ethereal, upward-reaching feel. If you step inside, look at the vibrant stained-glass windows. These were actually made in Munich, Germany, in the 1870s before being shipped across the ocean to Madras. They depict the life of Saint Thomas and his interactions with Jesus, casting colorful patterns across the nave as the Indian sun moves across the sky.

   The Sacred Crypt and the Relics

   The most sacred part of this basilica lies beneath the floor. Follow the signs to the underground tomb chapel, a quiet crypt that houses what remains of the apostle. While much of Saint Thomas’s body was moved to Italy centuries ago, this shrine still holds a small bone fragment from his hand and the very spearhead believed to have ended his life. In the crypt, you will see a life-sized statue of the saint in a resting state, encased in glass. Nearby, you should also look for the statue of Our Lady of Mylapore, also known as Mylai Matha. This wooden statue was brought all the way from Portugal in 1543 and was a central focus of prayer for Saint Francis Xavier during his months-long stay here in the mid-sixteenth century. It remains one of the oldest and most beloved statues of the Virgin Mary in East India.

   As you prepare to continue your exploration, take a moment to enjoy the deep sense of peace that permeates this active place of worship. The basilica is open daily from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m., though please remember to remain silent and dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. If you have extra time, the onsite museum offers a closer look at sixteenth-century maps and carvings that tell the story of the site's transformation. Just outside the gates, the bustle of Chennai returns, and a short walk east will lead you directly to the legendary Marina Beach. What else might you find in the sands where an apostle once walked? Keep your eyes open for the small Pole of Saint Thomas nearby, which local legend says protected the cathedral from the devastating 2,004 tsunami.
