Luodong Forestry Culture Park: what does the audio guide cover?

  1. 01

Welcome to Luodong Forestry Culture Park

Welcome to Luodong Forestry Culture Park, a green pocket of about 16 hectares right in the middle of downtown Luodong, in Yilan County. Its address is number 118, Zhongzheng North Road, which tells you something important: you do not need to head into the mountains to find this place. The mountains came to it. This was once the site of the Luodong Administration Office and a storage pond for raft logs. Timber cut in the forests of Baxian Mountain, Alishan and Taiping Mountain was gathered here before moving on. Today the old logging hub is a place to wander, with a pond, a steam locomotive and stretches of forest railway track. Over the next few minutes we will follow the story of the timber trade from the Japanese period to the park you see now. We will also look at the railway, the buildings and the pond, and at how a working industrial yard became a place for slow walks. Plan on two to three hours if you want to see it all properly.

  2. 02

    A Timber Town Is Born

Our story begins in 1905. In that year, the land where you are standing became a major timber production area for the Luodong Branch of the Taiping Forest Area, managed by the Forestry Agency of the Empire of Japan. Taiping Mountain's forests were a rich resource, and Luodong became the place where that resource was gathered and sent onward. The logs left Yilan by way of the Lanyang River. Picture a river that doubled as a highway, with timber that had come down from the high country waiting its turn at the water's edge. That is why a pond sits at the heart of this park. It was a working timber pond, a holding area for logs, long before it became a quiet pool for ducks and aquatic plants. The forestry business shaped Luodong itself. The park's own story describes a time when the town thrived because of logging. As you walk, remember that you are tracing the footprint of the industry that helped build the town around you.

  3. 03

The Forest Railway and Zhulin Station

Now look down at the tracks. In 1921, the forestry agency bought the Taiwan Sugar Railway from the Taiwan Sugar Factory and put it to a new use as the Luodong Forest Railway, carrying timber. It is a neat bit of recycling: a line built to move sugar became a line for moving logs. The restored Zhulin Station is worth finding. It is a small station building, yet it was once a bustling starting point of the Luodong Forest Railway, and it still holds the atmosphere of the Japanese colonial period. Some of the staff housing nearby reflects Japanese-style architecture too, so take a moment to look at the rooflines and wooden detail. You will also see a restored hand-pushed timber rail, originally used for moving logs. Many lumber mills once stood around the Luodong forestry offices, and rail tracks were laid to link them. Together with the steam locomotive on display, these pieces show how timber moved through the yard from the river and the mountains toward the mills.

  4. 04

From Depleted Forests to Cultural Park

By the 1970s, the forests had been depleted and logging fell sharply. The Luodong Forest Railway closed in 1982, and the site was left abandoned for some time. A busy industrial yard in the center of town sat quiet. Then came a change of purpose. Between 1994 and 2001, the Third Luodong Township Urban Planning Review designated the area as a special forestry industry culture site. In 2004, the Forestry Bureau unveiled a plan to turn it into a culture park, and in the same year the Council for Cultural Affairs listed all the remaining artifacts and buildings in the area as historical assets. What opened is a park that keeps the memory of the industry alive. The timber pond is now a natural ecology pool, and there is an aquatic plant pond. Exhibition halls explain the history of the Taipingshan forestry industry and the wood processing process. Others cover the use of bamboo and bamboo charcoal. The ecology zone is especially good with children, and the whole place invites you to contemplate the days when logging kept Luodong thriving.

  5. 05

    Before You Head Off

As you finish your walk, try seeing the park as a whole story laid out on the ground: a river, a pond, a railway, a few small buildings and an industry that once shaped a town. Each piece answers a different question about how mountain timber reached the mills of Luodong. Before you leave, look once more at the tracks and the water. Ask yourself where a log would have entered the yard, and where it would have gone next. Notice how the quiet today contrasts with the working life the place once had. There is more to discover in the exhibition halls, where the Taipingshan forestry story and the craft of bamboo and bamboo charcoal are told in more depth. If you have time, go back to a corner you passed quickly. This park rewards a second look.
