This choice of material was intentional, designed to make the mosque one of the few pink mosques in the world. If you look closer at the foundation, you will realize that more than half of the mosque is built over the water of the lake. For instance, the basement walls are inspired by the King Hassan Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco, while the minaret’s specific shape takes cues from the Sheikh Omar Mosque in Baghdad.    Stepping toward the main prayer hall, you will encounter a space that can accommodate 10,000 worshippers, while the outer courtyard, or Sahn, can hold another 5,000. The interior is supported by 12 massive columns that prop up the main dome, which is 36 meters in diameter. If you are visiting as a tourist, please remember that this is an active place of worship. You are welcome to visit outside of daily prayer times—generally from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and then again from two o'clock until four o'clock. A practical pointer for all visitors: modesty is essential. If you aren't dressed to cover your shoulders and knees, don't worry—the mosque provides distinctive pink robes at the entrance free of charge for you to wear during your visit. Remember to remove your shoes before stepping onto the sacred floors.
