   A Legacy Carved from the Forest

   The story of Himmerod begins around 1134 when Saint Bernard of Clairvaux personally chose this remote site. Legend says he found a different nearby location too restricted and preferred this open clearing, far from the distractions of main roads. The Cistercian monks who followed him were pioneers of the land; they transformed thorny thickets into fertile gardens and established a fishery that still operates today. This philosophy of manual labor and prayer made the abbey wealthy, allowing them to plant the very first vineyards on the steep slopes of the Mosel Valley, essentially helping to shape Germany’s world-famous wine culture. Even though the monastery was dissolved in 1802 under French occupation and fell into ruin, the Cistercians returned in 1922 to bring these stones back to life, continuing a tradition of resilience that lasted until their final departure in 2017.
