Day trips from Paris

Versailles is the easy one: the RER C takes about 40 minutes from central Paris. Mont-Saint-Michel and the Loire castles are long days, by an early train or on a tour. Mappu has a free audio guide with a map for the Palace of Versailles, Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, and the châteaux of Chenonceau and Chambord.

Where to go

Versailles

Louis XIV’s palace: the Hall of Mirrors, the State Apartments and the formal gardens, with the Trianon palaces and the Queen’s Hamlet across the park.

Getting there
RER C to Versailles Château Rive Gauche, then a 10-minute walk. Trains from Saint-Lazare and Montparnasse also serve Versailles.
Time
About 40 minutes each way; allow most of a day for the palace and the gardens.

Mont-Saint-Michel

A tidal island off the coast of Normandy, crowned by a medieval abbey, with a village of steep lanes below its walls.

Getting there
TGV from Paris Montparnasse to Rennes, then a direct coach to Mont-Saint-Michel. From the car park, a free shuttle crosses the causeway to the island.
Time
About 3 hours each way; allow 45 to 90 minutes for the abbey.

Chenonceau and Chambord

Two of the Loire castles: Chenonceau spans the river Cher on its arches, and Chambord, built for Francis I, has its double-spiral staircase.

Getting there
For Chenonceau, a TGV to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, near Tours, then a regional train to Chenonceaux; trains are few, so check the timetable. Chambord has no station: go from Blois, on a seasonal shuttle or a tour.
Time
About 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours each way; about 2 hours for Chenonceau.

How to plan the day

  1. Versailles: go early, and not on a Monday, when the palace is closed.
  2. Mont-Saint-Michel and the Loire castles: one per day. Without a car, a tour saves the connections.
  3. For the Loire, the castles’ tours from Tours are a good middle way: a fast train to Tours, then a small group.

Questions travellers ask

Is Versailles worth a day trip from Paris?

Yes, and it is the easiest one: about 40 minutes on the RER C. The palace and the gardens fill most of a day; the palace is closed on Mondays.

Can you do Mont-Saint-Michel as a day trip from Paris?

Yes, but it is a long day: about 3 hours each way by train and coach. A coach tour from Paris takes about as long and saves the connections.
