Day trips from London

Windsor is the closest, under an hour by train. Canterbury is about an hour away on the high-speed line, Bath about 1 hour 30 minutes, and Stonehenge takes a train to Salisbury and a bus. Mappu has a free audio guide with a map for Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, the Roman Baths and Canterbury Cathedral.

About 1 hour 30 minutes each way; a full day for the baths and the city.

Canterbury

Canterbury Cathedral, the mother church of the Church of England, where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170, in a walled medieval city.

Getting there
High-speed trains from London St Pancras to Canterbury West; the cathedral is about 10 minutes’ walk from the station.
Time
About 1 hour each way; half a day to a full day.

How to plan the day

  1. By train, one place per day works best. Windsor and Canterbury each fit in half a day.
  2. Stonehenge and Bath together make a long day that is easiest on a coach tour from London.
  3. Book Stonehenge and Windsor Castle ahead in summer, and check the castle’s opening days on the official site.
