Welcome to the Hoi An Old Town Walk. You are standing in the heart of what was once the most important trading port in Southeast Asia between the 15th and 19th centuries. The name Hoi An translates beautifully to 'Peaceful Meeting Place' in Sino-Vietnamese, and as you begin to walk, you will see exactly why. Take a deep breath and look around you. This town is a perfectly preserved living museum of yellow-walled houses, narrow alleys, and a vibrant riverfront that seems almost frozen in time. In 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, officially recognized this ancient town as a World Heritage Site, noting its unique fusion of indigenous and foreign cultures. As you stroll, you are quite literally walking through centuries of history, where the scents of burning incense, local herbs, and the nearby Thu Bon River create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.
