Welcome to the Valley of the Temples, a place that is, quite surprisingly, not actually a valley at all. As you stand here in Agrigento, look around and you will see that you are actually perched high on a majestic rocky ridge overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This site is the remains of the ancient city of Akragas, founded in five hundred eighty-two before Christ by Greek settlers from Gela and Rhodes. In its prime, Akragas was so wealthy and influential that the poet Pindar famously described it as the most beautiful city ever built by mortals. Today, you are standing in one of the largest archaeological parks in the world, covering over one thousand three hundred hectares of sacred ground. Before you begin your walk along the ancient sacred way, take a moment to breathe in the sea breeze and imagine this ridge crowned with the white-painted stone and vibrant colors of multiple colossal temples. You are about to walk in the footsteps of ancient philosophers, tyrants, and the thousands of people who made this city a beacon of the ancient Mediterranean world.
