Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Pick Pompeii for the scale of a whole Roman city: the Forum, the theatres, the plaster casts and the Villa of the Mysteries. Pick Herculaneum if you have about two hours, would rather avoid crowds, or want houses that still have their upper floors, wooden beams and bright mosaics. With a full day you can see both: they are about 20 minutes apart on the same train line.

Which one is for you

Choose Pompeii if

  • You want to walk through an entire Roman city, with its Forum, baths, theatres, bakeries and shops.
  • You want to see the plaster casts of the eruption’s victims and the frescoes of the Villa of the Mysteries.
  • You have half a day or more and are happy to walk 3 to 6 km on uneven basalt paving.

Choose Herculaneum if

  • You have about two hours, or you are travelling with children or with little energy to spare.
  • You would rather share the streets with fewer people: Herculaneum is far quieter than Pompeii.
  • You want detail over scale: carbonized wood, upper floors, and the Neptune and Amphitrite mosaic still blue and gold.

How to see both in one day

  1. Start at Pompeii when it opens, before the heat and the tour groups, and give it four to five hours.
  2. Take the Circumvesuviana train, the Naples to Sorrento line, from Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri to Ercolano Scavi. The ride takes about 20 minutes.
  3. From Ercolano Scavi station, walk about 10 minutes downhill to the entrance on Corso Resina and spend the afternoon in Herculaneum.
  4. Coming from Naples, Herculaneum is the first stop: the other way round works too, but Pompeii is easier early in the day.

Questions travellers ask

Is Herculaneum better than Pompeii?

Neither is better; they are different. Herculaneum is better preserved and easy to see in about two hours. Pompeii is far larger and shows a whole city. With half a day and a first visit to the Bay of Naples, Pompeii gives you the bigger picture; with two hours, or if you dislike crowds, choose Herculaneum.

How much time do Pompeii and Herculaneum need?

Plan half a day or more for Pompeii, where you will walk 3 to 6 km, and about two hours for Herculaneum.

Can you visit Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day?

Yes. Both are on the Circumvesuviana line between Naples and Sorrento, about 20 minutes apart. See Pompeii in the morning and Herculaneum in the afternoon.

Are the Mappu audio guides free?

Yes. Both guides are free to listen to on the web, with no account, and each comes with a map of the site.
