Lofoten map: the E10 road trip

The E10 is the one road that runs the length of Lofoten, and its stretch from Å to Svolvær is a drive of about 130 kilometres: past fishing villages, bridges and beaches, under steep peaks. The map shows the road, the villages on it and three detours worth the extra kilometres. The places along the way have free Mappu audio guides to listen to once you have stopped.

The places along the road

  1. Å

    Start

The fishing village at the south-western end of the E10, where the road stops. Drive north-east from here; the Moskenes quay for the Bodø ferry is just before Reine.

  2. Reine

The fishing village of Moskenes on the Reinefjord: red and white fishermen’s cabins on small islets, stockfish racks and the peak of Reinebringen above.

  3. Hamnøy

A small fishing village about 1.5 km north-east of Reine. A ferry once linked it to Reine; today the E10 crosses bridges past its red cabins.

  4. Fredvang bridges

Detour: about 1.5 km each way

Two bridges from 1988, each 240 m long, that link Flakstadøya with Fredvang on Moskenesøya. They are a short detour off the E10.

  5. Nusfjord

Detour: about 6.5 km each way

The fishing village at the end of its narrow fjord, chosen in 1975 as one of three Norwegian pilot projects to preserve old wooden settlements. It is not a UNESCO World Heritage site, as is often said.

  6. Henningsvær

Detour: about 8.5 km each way

The fishing village on several small islands off Austvågøya, reached from the E10 over bridges. Drone photos of its football pitch on the rocks made it famous.

  7. Svolvær

    End

The town in Vågan at the north-eastern end of this stretch, with the ferry to Skutvik. The E10 carries on towards Raftsundet and the mainland.

How to plan the drive

  1. Drive one way and plan nights along the road: with detours and stops it is more than a day.
  2. Stop only at rest areas, car parks and in the villages, never on the bridges or the verge of the E10.
  3. Check road conditions with Statens vegvesen before you set off, above all in winter.
  4. Listen to the audio guides once the car is parked: they are made for stops, not for driving.
