Day trips from Rome

Pompeii is the day trip from Rome that travellers ask about most, and it works: a fast train reaches Naples in about 1 hour 10 minutes, and the local train to the ruins takes about 35 minutes more. It is a long day, so start early. Herculaneum and Vesuvius are on the same side of the bay, and each has a free Mappu audio guide with a map.

Where to go

Pompeii

A whole Roman city buried by Vesuvius in AD 79: the Forum, the theatres, bakeries and shops, the plaster casts of the victims and the frescoes of the Villa of the Mysteries.

Getting there
Fast train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, then the Circumvesuviana towards Sorrento from Napoli Garibaldi, in the same station, to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri.
Time
About 2 hours each way; allow half a day on site.

Herculaneum

Smaller and far quieter than Pompeii, with houses that still have their upper floors, carbonized wood and bright mosaics.

Getting there
The same route as Pompeii, but get off the Circumvesuviana at Ercolano Scavi, about 20 minutes from Naples, and walk about 10 minutes downhill to the entrance.
Time
About 1 hour 40 minutes each way; about 2 hours on site.

Mount Vesuvius

The volcano that buried both towns. A path climbs from the car park near the top to the rim of the crater, with the whole Bay of Naples below.

Getting there
Shuttle buses run up from Ercolano and from Pompeii to the car park below the crater. Tickets for the crater path are sold online for a set time, so book ahead.
Time
Half a day from Ercolano or Pompeii; pair it with one of the two sites.

How to plan the day

  1. Pick one: Pompeii alone, or Herculaneum with Vesuvius. All three in one day from Rome is too much.
  2. Take an early fast train from Roma Termini, so you reach the ruins before midday heat and the tour groups.
  3. Check the last train back to Rome before you set off, and leave a margin for the Circumvesuviana, which can run late.
  4. Wear good shoes: Pompeii means 3 to 6 km on uneven Roman paving.

Check opening hours and tickets on the official sites before you go:

Questions travellers ask

Can you visit Pompeii as a day trip from Rome?

Yes. With a fast train to Naples and the Circumvesuviana, the trip takes about 2 hours each way, which leaves half a day for Pompeii. Start early and check the last train back.

Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Pompeii for the scale of a whole Roman city; Herculaneum if you have about two hours, would rather avoid crowds, or want houses with their upper floors. Mappu’s “Pompeii or Herculaneum?” page compares them.

Do I need a tour?

No. The trains are simple, and Mappu’s audio guides to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius are free. A guided tour helps if you want an archaeologist with you or skip-the-line entry.

Travel times are typical timetable times from the rail operators; check the day’s timetable. The facts about each site come from Mappu’s guides and the sites’ official websites. Trenitalia, EAV (Circumvesuviana), Vesuvius National Park. Last checked on .
