Day trips from Madrid

Toledo and Segovia are the two classic day trips from Madrid, and each is about 30 minutes away by high-speed train. Toledo has its Gothic cathedral and the Alcázar above the river Tagus; Segovia has its Roman aqueduct and its Alcázar on a rock. Mappu has free audio guides with maps for both.

Where to go

Toledo

A hill town wrapped by the river Tagus, with the Primate Cathedral, one of the great Gothic cathedrals of Spain, and the Alcázar at the top of the town, now the Army Museum.

Getting there
High-speed Avant trains from Madrid Atocha take about 33 minutes. From Toledo station, take a city bus or walk about 20 minutes up into the old town.
Time
About 1 hour each way with the walk up; a full day is best.

Segovia

The Roman aqueduct strides across the town square, and the Alcázar, on a rock where two rivers meet, looks like a castle from a storybook.

Getting there
High-speed trains from Madrid Chamartín reach Segovia-Guiomar station in about 30 minutes; a city bus takes you to the aqueduct in about 15 minutes.
Time
About 45 minutes each way; allow 40 to 45 minutes inside the Alcázar.

How to plan the day

  1. Pick one town per day: each is a full day once you add the old town to the main sites.
  2. Toledo’s trains leave from Atocha and Segovia’s from Chamartín, and there is no direct train between the two towns.
  3. Seeing both in one day is only realistic on a coach tour from Madrid.

Questions travellers ask

Toledo or Segovia?

Toledo for its cathedral, its maze of old streets and the views over the Tagus; Segovia for the Roman aqueduct and the Alcázar. Both are about 30 minutes by high-speed train, so pick the one that matches what you want to see.

Can I see Toledo and Segovia in one day?

Not easily by train: they are on different lines from different Madrid stations. A coach tour from Madrid does both in one long day.
